[An exclusive consultation with George Foss, former standard manager of Kayser Nutrition, southern California's health feed store chain to the wealthy and famous for 52 years. George has been called a "walking repository of nutritional supplement exploration knowledge," and is a long-time consultant to the nutritional supplement industry. Featured on a assortment of television and radio news broadcasts over the past 20 years, he is widely considered by west coast news media outlets to be the nutritional supplement industry's "go to" guy on natural health topics.]

Steve Barwick: George, I perceive that today you are going to disclose four simple yet very powerful ways to dramatically maximize the energy-boosting gains of D-Ribose. We’ll get to that in just a minute. But first, could you aid us perceive how D-Ribose helps people regain youthful energy levels – peculiarly humans who suffer from either age-related energy deficit disorders or disease-induced energy deficit disorders?

George Foss: Well, initial of all, people with disease-induced energy deficit disorders — such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, MS, lupus, AIDS and a great deal of others — are actually being robbed of their critical energy by the sickness routine itself. In the case of chronic fatigue, it is believed that the Epstein Barr virus or a heap of other pathogen such as mycoplasmas in truth infiltrate and attack the body’s cells. These pathogens badly harm the capacity of the cellular mitochondria to develop sufficient amounts of ATP. Of course, ATP is the body’s chief energy molecule. Since in a literal sense hundreds of millions of cells may be damaged or compromised by an underlying infectious illness, the remaining undamaged cells are left with the task of attempting to formulate sufficient ATP to fuel the entire body. It’s like an eight cylinder car running on only five or six cylinders. The body merely becomes weaker and weaker over time, because the damaged cells are functioning at excessively low levels, and the undamaged cells are being taxed to their limits. The impairment of normal physiological function routine spreads, because the cells cannot fabricate sufficient energy to empower the body to fight it off.

Fortunately, by supplying the body with supplemental D-Ribose — fundamentally flooding the cells with the nutritional fuel they need to manufacture dramatic levels of extra energy in the form of ATP — you may oftentimes “jump start” the body back into high gear. The immune scheme gets the energy it needs to commence functioning at peak levels again. The brain gets the energy it needs to direct the healing process. Neurons fire better, not just in the brain but all around the entire nervous system, sending healing chemical and electronic messages allround the body with lightning speed. Synaptic transmission is restored to peak function. There is even a good deal of proof that the cells damaged by the pathogens start out to recover when given the fuel they need for self-repair. And finally, energy levels are to a complete degree restored, and the body is capable to pull itself out of the downward spiral caused by the underlying sickness process.

Steve Barwick: What regarding energy deficit disorders affiliated to aging?

George Foss: Well, aging is of course a normal process. And there is not much we may do with regards to it but take care of our bodies by avoiding toxins and by making sure we get the proper nutrition, hydration and each and everyday exercise our bodies need. Yet even if we are very good at doing these things, we will inevitably suffer from lower energy levels as we age. In huge part, this is because, as we get older, our digestion does not function as well. And without proper digestion, our body is not capable to extract the same levels of D-Ribose from feed it once could. So there is less D-Ribose to send to the mitochondria for conversion into ATP. Because of this, we tardily commence to lose energy as we age. When D-Ribose is not extracted from the foods we eat and delivered to the cells in sufficient sufficient quantities to sustain normal each and everyday bodily functions, we plainly get started to slow down. And rather commonly, fatigue and malaise sets in. But by supplementing with even little amounts of D-Ribose, we may make up for much of that lost energy caused by the normal aging process. The bottom line is that if we may give the cells what they need – in this case, supplemental D-Ribose — we may maintain a much higher level of each day energy than we could if we did not supplement. This is why so a good deal of middle-aged and older folks now supplement each morning with D-Ribose.

Steve Barwick: Well, at 52 years old, I know I use it. And frankly, I wouldn’t go a day without it. So what are a great deal of of the best ways to take D-Ribose for it is well-known energy-boosting benefits?

George Foss: Based upon my experiences with clients over the past ten years, I’d say most healthful people who want to take D-Ribose for a little bit of extra energy in general need to take only one or two capsules a day by mouth — normally with a little bit of food. Each capsule will have to be a minimum of 700 mg. That way, if you take two capsules per day, you are getting almost a gram and a half of D-Ribose, which is a nice dose for a comparatively healthful person. However, if you are suffering from any kind of energy deficit disorder, you may need to either take significantly more D-Ribose, or take it a bit differently in order to maximize it is energy-boosting benefits.

Steve Barwick: You’re saying there are dissimilar ways to take D-Ribose, so as to get more oomph out of it?

George Foss: Yes, absolutely. Here are four powerful ways to maximize your D-Ribose energy-boosting benefits, without having to increase your dosage:

1.) Take it sublingually. This means you ought to plainly pour it out of the capsule directly beneath your tongue, and then swish it around inside your mouth so that it coats your cheeks and gums. Do this for various minutes. This allows the body to absorb much of the D-Ribose directly into the bloodstream through the rich network of veins found beneath the tongue, and in the cheeks and gums, thereby bypassing the normal digestive procedure in which galore D-Ribose is inevitably lost. D-Ribose is a carbohydrate, a complex form of sugar, so it tastes more or less sweet, and for most people is not distasteful at all. This little trick alone will support dramatically maximize the effectiveness of D-Ribose when you take it.

2.) Another way to maximize your D-Ribose energy-boosting gains is to take it with a mercantile liquid hydration formula, such as Gatorade. Because Gatorade is quintessentially designed to hydrate the body’s 7 trillion cells, mixing various 700 mg. capsules worth of D-Ribose into a glassful before drinking it will aid draw the D-Ribose directly into the cells very quickly, resulting in a dramatic physical energy boost that merely can not be achieved by taking D-Ribose with water or other liquids alone. However, insulin dependent diabetics and hypoglycemics ought to only use this method beneath a doctor’s guidance and supervision, and blood sugar must be monitored closely, due to the sugars in the Gatorade.

3.) You may likewise dramatically maximize your D-Ribose energy-boosting gains by taking it with synergistic nutrients. D-Ribose have a tendancy to significantly increase the body’s capacity to absorb and efficaciously implement other nutrients. By taking it with B-vitamins, such as a good “B-50″ formula, which is to say, 50 mg. of each of the major B-vitamins, you will maximize the beneficial effects of the vitamins by up to 100%. And the vitamins will dramatically extend the beneficial effects of the D-Ribose allround the day. Other synergistic nutrients that may be taken with D-Ribose for extraordinary energy-boosting gains are magnesium (200 mg.), malic acid (900 mg.), iodine (200 mcg.), selenium (200 mcg), tyrosine (500 mg.) and vitamin C (500 mg.), to mention but a few. One of my favored combinings is 700 mg. of D-Ribose taken with 1,000 mg. of chewable B-12 in the methylcobalamin form.

4.) Finally, a very powerful way to maximize your D-Ribose energy-boosting gains is to take it from time to time with an immune scheme booster such as Beta-glucan. This is a little-known mystery I learned from various people with severe chronic fatigue, who used it to very good effect whenever they necessitated to speedily recover from a debilitating chronic fatigue “crash.” Taken together, the synergy amid D-Ribose and Beta-glucan appears to double or even triple the person gains of each supplement. Energy and clear thinking may often be restored within a couple of hours, even when the mental “fog” so mutual to chronic fatigue is severe. What’s more, immunity may be restored to higher pre-crash levels very quickly. And when taken for various days in a row, the uplifting mental and physical effects of this dynamic duo may last for various days to assorted weeks afterwards. Some regular D-Ribose users have told me that they merely take a “booster” using this combining of nutrients once a week, in order to prevent any further chronic fatigue “crashes.’ By the way, the best form of Beta-glucan to use for this technique is the to a complete degree micronized Beta-1,3-1,6-glucan, available exclusively from a company in Liberty, Texas called Nutritional Supply Corporation. They may be reached at 1-888-246-7224, extension 222. D-Ribose can, of course, be purchased from our good friends at The Silver Edge by calling 1-800-528-0559, or by visiting them online at http://www.thesilveredge.com

Steve Barwick: George, it has been a real pleasure talking with you today. And it is always an eye-opening experience. We surely be grateful for your very interesting insights. Thank you for taking the time to visit with us.

George Foss: Thank you, Steve. It’s been my pleasure. For more in-depth data on D-Ribose, see the “Unique Nutritional Supplements” link at http://www.thesilveredge.com.

F. McCarthy
This is exactly the right size for me for the amount of medications I ever expect to take. At first, I had trouble getting the compartments to open.

The problem is that by pressing your finger or thumb against the side of the box to slide up to catch the edge of the lid where it sticks out for opening, you are pressing in on the side keeping the little projection on the lid that holds it shut from popping out of the little depression inside that it needs to pop out of. Sorry that I can’t describe that better.

The manufacturer tries to guide you around this by having an arrow and the word “LIFT” imprinted on the _corner_ of the lid to direct you away from putting pressure on the middle of the side and blocking your own efforts. If you limit your contact to the end or corner of the lifting tab it works fine.

Some “hot rodding” suggestions for those of you who want to improve your pill cases. First, when it’s time to reload, I just twist the entire four compartment section to get all four to open at once. Then I make sure all the lids are exactly straight up. That way, when I put it back in the base, its lids don’t block the next compartments over. With all 28 compartments open I can load up a week surprisingly fast.

Additional loading suggestions. Have any simple med/large pair of tweezers handy. Pills sometimes bounce out of one compartment to another.

Fastest loading, I’ve found, is to either get a small round bottom cup or use the palm of your hand. Pour a little more than the amount of pills you expect to need into it. Then hold that next to each compartment as you go by. Going back and forth to piles of pills to the side turns out to be the most time consuming part of the operation. Take the pills to the boxes.

Since I plan for accidents, I put a convenient size rubber band going around the length of each days set. When they are in the storage base, I put it around horizontally just under the lids so it doesn’t get in the way of putting the loaded set of boxes back into the base.

When I take the day’s set out for bedside or to go with me away from home, I move the rubber band around to cover the open sides of the lids about 6mm/quarter inch in from the open side. This gives a sort of “spring loaded” effect to the lids. If I drop the box on the floor, everything stays inside. But it’s easy to hold the lid open against the pressure of the band.

When a day is empty, I leave the band vertical and wedge the box back in the base. That makes it easy to separate the used from the ready to go. (I confuse easy.) If you need to separate some boxes from others, I would suggest coloring the _INSIDE_ of the lids with permanent markers in different colors. That way the colors won’t wipe off as easily.

Good luck, three more will let me do a month at a time. I’ve been wanting this for a long time.

I have mild arthritis in my hands and find them hard to operate; advanced arthritis would make this nearly impossible. While it is nice to be able to remove the pills for one day from the tray, the daily containers come out when you do not want them to and are too large to put in your pocket. The overall tray is large; takes up too much space on a bedside table. This is a great organizer for someone who takes a lot of pills and gets confused easily. I prefer the twice-a-day organizer, which is smaller, easier to open and allows me to select pills for the first or second half of a 24-hour period.

Manning
These pills trays are fantastic. I wish they were available in the UK. Easy to open for aged hands, and braille on each little box too! I wish they came in more than one colour, both my parents need a different coloured tray – to stop them from taking the wrong pills! I have just emailed Rock Ridge sales to see if they produce them in other colours!

They were very quick in supplying me from USA to UK too!

Herbal medicine is the medicine of the people. It is simple, safe, effective, and free. Our ancestors used – and our neighbors around the world still use – plant medicines for healing and health maintenance. It’s easy. You may do it too, and you don’t need a degree or any special training.

Ancient memories arise in you when you get started to use herbal medicine. These lessons are designed to nourish and activate those memories and your inner herbalist so you may be your own herbal expert.

In our original lesson, we learned how to “listen” to the plants by focusing on how they taste. In lesson two, we explored simples and water-based herbal remedies. In the third lesson, we learned how to tell safe (nourishing and tonifying) herbs from more dangerous (stimulating and sedating) herbs. Our fourth lesson dealt with poisons; we learned how to make a tincture and we put together our Herbal Medicine Chest. The fifth lesson found us making herbal vinegars, and the sixth, making herbal oils.

In our last lesson together, we looked at our thoughts when it comes to healing; we discussed the Scientific goal of fixing the broken machine, the Heroic intent to cleanse the toxins from our polluted bodies, and the Wise Woman desire to nourish the wholeness of the distinctive individual.

In this, the eighth lesson, we return to the herbal pharmacy, to make healing sweets: herbal honeys, syrups, and cough drops.

In our next lesson, the ninth and last of this series, we will carry on our exploration of the ideas behind healing with a tour of the Seven Medicines.

HONEY

Honey has been regarded as a healing substance for thousands of years. Greek healers relied on honey water, vinegar water, and honey/vinegar water as their important cures. An Egyptian medical text dated to in regards to 2600 BCE mentions honey 500 times in 900 remedies. What makes honey so special?

First, honey is antibacterial. It counters contagions on the skin, in the intestines, in the respiratory system, or all around the body.

Second, honey is hydroscopic, a long word meaning “water loving”. Honey holds moisture in the place where it is put; it may even draw moisture out of the air. A honey facial leaves skin smooth and deliciously moist. These two calibers – anti-infective and hydroscopic – make honey an idealisti healer of wounds of all kinds, including burns, bruises and decubita (skin ulcers), an amazing soother for sore throats, a powerful ally versus bacterial diarrhea, and a counter to asthma.

Third, honey may be as high as 35 percent protein. This, along with the readily-available carbohydrate (sugar) content, provides a substantial surge of energy and a counter to depression. Some origins assert that honey is equal, or superior, to ginseng in restoring vitality. Honey’s proteins likewise advertize healing, both internally and externally.

And honey is a source of vitamins B, C, D and E, as well as a lot of minerals. It appears to beef up the immune scheme and help prevent (some writers assert to cure) cancer.

Honey is gathered from flowers, and person honeys from specific flowers may be more beneficial than a blended honey. Tupelo honey, from tupelo tree blossoms, is high in levulose, which slows the digestion of the honey making it more suitable for diabetics. Manuka honey, from New Zealand, is certified as antibacterial. My “house brand” is a rich, black, locally-produced autumn honey gathered by the bees from golden rod, buckwheat, chicory, and other wild flowers.

Raw honey likewise holds pollen and propolis, bee and flower productions that have particular healing powers.

Bee pollen, like honey, is a concentrated source of protein and vitamins; different from honey, it is a good source of minerals, hormonal precursors, and fatty acids. Bee pollen has a reputation for relieving, and with consistent use, curing allergies and asthma. The pollens that cause allergic reactions are from plants that are wind-pollinated, not bee-pollinated, so any bee pollen, or any honey containing pollen, ought to be helpful. One researcher found an 84 percent reduction in sensations or changes amidst allergy sufferers who consumed a spoonful of honey a day for the duration of the spring, summer, and fall plus three times a week in the winter.

Propolis is made by the bees from resinous tree saps and is a powerful antimicrobial substance. Propolis may be tinctured in pure grain alcohol (resins do not dissolve well in 100 proof vodka, my primary choice for tinctures) and used to counter contagions such as bronchitis, sinusitis, colds, flus, gum disease, and tooth decay.

WARNING: All honey, but exceptionally raw honey, holds the spores of botulinus. While this is not a problem for adults, children beneath the age of one year may not have sufficient stomach acid to prevent these spores from devising into botulism, a deadly poison.

HERBAL HONEYS

Herbal honeys are made by pouring honey over fresh herbs and permitting them to merge over a amount of time of assorted days to various months. When herbs are infused into honey, the water-loving honey absorbs all the water-soluble constituents of the herb, and all the volatile oils too, most of which are anti-infective. Herbal honeys are medicinal and they taste great. When I look at my shelf of herbal honeys I feel like the richest person in the world.

USING YOUR HERBAL HONEYS

Place a tablespoonful of your herbal honey (include herb as well as honey) into a mug; add boiling water; stir and drink. Or, eat herbal honeys by the spoonful right from the jar to soothe and heal sore, infected throats and tonsils. Smear the honey (no herb please) onto wounds and burns.

MAKE AN HERBAL HONEY

Coarsely chop the fresh herb of your choice (leave garlic whole).

Put chopped herb into a wide-mouthed jar, filling almost to the top.

Pour honey into the jar, working it into the herb with a chopstick if needed.

Add a little more honey to fill the jar to the very top.

	Cover tightly. Label.

Your herbal honey is ready to use in as little as a day or two, but will be more medicinal if permitted to sit for six weeks.

Herbal honeys made from aromatic herbs make fantasti gifts.

MAKE A RUSSIAN COLD REMEDY

Fill a little jar with unpeeled cloves of garlic.

	Fill the jar with honey.

	Label and cover.

This remedy is ready to use the next day. It is taken by the spoonful to ward off both colds and flus. It is sovereign versus sore throats, too. And it tastes yummy!

(Garlic may likewise carry botulinus spores, but no adult has ever gotten botulism from this remedy. A local restaurant poisoned patrons by keeping garlic in olive oil near a hot stove for months before using it, though.)

MAKE AN EGYPTIAN WOUND SALVE

“I thought at basi this would be dreadful stuff to put on an open wound … Instead, the bacteria in the fat disappeared and when pathogenic bacteria were added … they were killed just as fast,” commented scientists who tested this formula found in the ancient Smith Papyrus.

Mix one tablespoonful of honey with two tablespoonsful of organic animal fat.

Put in a little jar and label.

Increase the wound-healing capacity of this salve by using an herbally-infused fat.

Drink alternately from both glasses until empty.

MAKE DR. CHRISTOPHER’S BURN HEALER

He recommends this for burns covering huge areas. Keep the burn constantly wet with this healer for best results.

Place chopped fresh comfrey leaves in a blender.

Add aloe vera gel to half cover.

	Add honey to cover.

	Blend and apply.

Best to make only as much as you may use in a day; store extra in refrigerator.

HERBAL SYRUPS

Herbal syrups are sweetened, condensed herbal infusions. Cough drops are concentrated syrups. Alcohol is ofttimes added to syrups to support prevent fermentation and stabilize the remedy. Cough drops and lozenges, having less water, keep well without the addition of alcohol.

Bitter herbs, exceptionally when effective in a reasonably little dose, are oftentimes made into syrups: horehound, yellow dock, dandelion, chicory, and motherwort spring to mind in this regard.

Herbs that are specially effective in relieving throat contagions and breathing difficulties are likewise oftentimes made into syrups, peculiarly when honey is used as the sweetener: coltsfoot flowers (not leaves), comfrey leaves (not roots), horehound, elder berries, mullein, osha root, pine, sage, and wild cherry bark are favorites for “cough” syrups.

USING HERBAL SYRUPS

A dose of most herbal syrup is 1-3 teaspoonfuls, taken as needed. Take a spoonful of bitter syrup just before meals for best results. Take cough syrups as ofttimes as each hour.

MAKE AN HERBAL SYRUP

To make an herbal syrup you will need the following supplies:

One ounce of dried herb (weight, not volume)

A clean arid quart/liter jar with a tight lid

	Boiling water

	Measuring cup

	A heavy-bottomed medium-sized saucepan

2 cups sugar or 1½ cups honey

A sterilized jar with a little neck and a good lid (a cork stopper is ideal)

	A little vodka (optional)

	A label and pen

Place the full ounce of dried herb into the quart jar and fill it to the top with boiling water. Cap tightly. After 4-10 hours, decant your infusion, saving the liquid and squeezing the herb to get the last of the goodness out of it.

Measure the amount of liquid you have (usually with regards to 3½ cups). Pour this into the saucepan and fetch to a boil. Reduce the heat until the infusion is just hardly simmering. Continue to simmer until the liquid is scaled down by half (pour it out of the pan and into the measuring cup now and then to check). This step may take various hours; the decoction is not spoiled if it is scaled down to less than half, but it is ruined if it boils hard or if it burns. Keep a close eye on it.

When you have scaled down the infusion to less then two cups, add the sugar or honey (or sweetener of your choice) and fetch to a rolling boil. Pour, boiling hot, into your jar. (Sterilize the jar by boiling it in plain water for a few minutes just before filling it.) If desired, add a lot of vodka to preserve the syrup.

Allow the bottle of syrup to come to room temperature. Label it. Store it in the refrigerator or keep it in a cool place.

MAKE HERBAL COUGH DROPS

You will have to make a syrup with sugar, not honey to make cough drops, but you may use raw sugar or brown sugar rather of white sugar and it will work just as well.

Instead of pouring your boiling hot syrup into a bottle, keep boiling it. Every minute or so, drop a bit into cold water. When it forms a hard ball in the cold water, without delay turn off the fire. Pour your very thick syrup into a buttered flat dish. Cool, then cut into little squares.

A dusting of powdered sugar will keep them from sticking. Store airtight in a cool place.

MAKE THROAT-SOOTHING LOZENGES

Put an ounce of marshmallow root powder or slippery elm bark powder in a bowl.

Slowly add honey, stirring constantly, until you have a thick paste

Roll your slippery elm paste into little balls

Roll the balls in more slippery elm powder

Store in a tightly-closed tin. These will keep for up to ten years.

PLANTS THAT I USE TO MAKE HERBAL SYRUPS

COMING UP

In our last lesson of this series, we will consider in detail the Seven Medicines: Serenity Medicine, Story Medicine, Energy Medicine, LifeStyle Medicine, Herbal and Alternative Medicine, Pharmaceutical Medicine, and Hi-Tech Medicine.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER ONE

Make a simple syrup, using only one plant. Make it once with honey, once with white sugar, and once with a sweetener of your choice, such as barley malt, agave syrup, molasses, sorghum syrup, or maple syrup. (See list for suggestions of plants to use.)

EXPERIMENT NUMBER TWO

Make a syrup with three or more plants. Choose plants that are local to your area, or ones that you may most without apparent effort buy.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER THREE

Make three or more simple herbal honeys using dissimilar constituents of plants, such as flowers, leaves, roots, or seeds. (See list for suggestions of plants to use.)

EXPERIMENT NUMBER FOUR

Make an herbal honey with a plant rich in necessary oils (such as sage, rosemary, lavender, or mint). Try it as a wound treatment. Try it on minor burns. Try it as a facial masque. Record your observations.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER FIVE

Make one or more of the recipes in this lesson.

FURTHER STUDY

Make a yellow dock iron tonic syrup following the recipe in my book Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year.

I have a very dry mouth due to an autoimmune disease (Sjogren’s Syndrome) and Ricola Breath Mints dissolve in my mouth and keep it moist and comfortable. I keep a package under my pillow for I wake several times with a “cottom mouth” so I pop in a mint, tuck it into my cheek and go back to sleep with a much more comfortabe mouth. Having very little saliva to protect your teeth makes the sugar-free mints invaluable as they do not cause tooth decay.

I’ve used Ricola ‘breath mints’ for years – all flavors. There are prescription products and OTC products like artificial saliva sprays and lozenges for dry mouth, but Ricola works best for me. I highly recommend them!

Most women would agree that drugs are to be obviated for the duration of pregnancy. Many over the counter remedies, in particular antihistamines, acne medicines, and laxatives, have been shown to cause birth defects in animals or humans. Antibiotics may cause fetal abnormalities and sulfur drugs may cause neo-natal jaundice. Tranquilizers and painkillers may cause birth defects and addict the fetus. Antacids may cause muscle troubles in the baby and edema in the mother. (In addition, they mess up a woman’s calcium metabolism; see discussion following.)

And it is well accepted that the drug-like actions of alcohol, tobacco, and coffee are best warded off both before conception, for the duration of pregnancy, and while lactating.

Few women, however, understand that vitamin/mineral supplements are more drug-like than food-like. Though they are widely recommended, even by orthodox MDs, supplements are problematic for pregnant women and ought to be avoided. A study of 23,000 pregnant women, reported in The New England Journal of Medicine (1995) found 4.8 times more birth defects among the children of women who consumed 10,000 IU or more of vitamin A in supplemental form. And if that isn’t sufficient to make you hesitate before reaching for the pills, consider this: the amount of iron in four prenatal-formula tablets may kill a child underneath the age of three.

In addition to drugs and supplements, a heap of mutual herbal remedies, including golden seal, and flax seed are best averted for the duration of the weeks of gestation. See underneath for herbs that may be problematic for the duration of pregnancy.

Nevertheless, there are a great deal of simple, safe home and herbal remedies available to ease the discomforts of pregnancy. The remedies of wise women, or “old wives,” have persisted for centuries, passed from woman to woman. They are not rigorous protocols designed to work with the greatest possible number of women. Rather, they are percentage of the ever-changing wisdom ways of women, meant to be used to the distinguishable person in distinguishable and ever-changing ways. Although they have not been subjected to double blind studies, they are not superstition and mute custom, but the results of millions of careful observations over thousands of generations. These remedies are the gifts of our foremothers. They are gifts from women who were deeply intuitive, immersed in day-to-day practice, and in tune with women’s needs – aroused and spiritual, as well as physical.

Wise women believe that most of the troubles of pregnancy may be prevented by attention to nutrition. Morning impairment of normal physiological function and mood swings are connected to low blood sugar; backaches and severe labor pains ofttimes result from insufficient calcium; and varicose veins, hemorrhoids, constipation, skin discolorations and anemias are also affiliated to lack of specific nutrients.

Excellent nutrition for pregnant women includes not just critical foodstuffs and nourishing herbal infusions, but also pure water and air, plentiful light, loving and respectful relationships, beauty and concord in each day life, and joyous thoughts.

All nutrients are necessitated in abundance for the duration of pregnancy as the gestating woman forms two extra pounds of uterine muscle; the nerves, bones, organs, muscles, glands and skin of the baby; various pounds of amniotic fluid; the placenta; and a great increase in blood volume. In addition, extra kidney and liver cells are developed to procedure the waste of two beings rather of one.

Wild and organically grown foods are the best source of vitamins, solid homogeneous inorgani substances and other nutrients necessitated for the duration of pregnancy. All the better if the expectant mother may get out and gather her own herbs: stretching, bending, breathing, moving, touching the earth, taking time to talk with the plants and to open herself to their spiritual world.

Red Raspberry (Rubus ideaus and other species)

For centuries herbalists have relied on the leaves of red raspberry to nourish pregnant women and relieve troubles for the duration of pregnancy and birth. Scientific herbalists are baffled by these claims, as they find no chemical parts in raspberry leaves that are competent of inducing these purported effects. Nonetheless, “if pregnant women believe that it provides relief from respective unpleasing effects affiliated with their condition, no injure is done,” says Varro Tyler in The Honest Herbal.

Most of the gains affiliated with regular use of raspberry allround pregnancy may be traced to it is astringent, strengthening, and nourishing powers. Raspberry leaves integrate tannins and fragrine, which give tone to the muscles of the pelvic region, including the uterus. They likewise incorporate nourishing vitamins and minerals. Of particular note are the concentrations of vitamins A, C, E, and B, plus generous amounts of effortlessly assimilated calcium, iron, phosphorous, and potassium salts.

A strong infusion of dried raspberry leaves increments fertility, tonifies the uterus, aids in easy birthing, helps prevent miscarriage, alleviates morning sickness, reduces muscle/leg cramps and backache, and counters fatigue.

To make it:

Put one ounce of the dried raspberry leaves in a quart jar; fill it to the top with boiling water, and cap tightly.

After steeping for at least four hours, strain the leaves out of the infusion.

Drink the liquid hot or cold, with honey, or anyway you like it.

	Refrigerate left-overs.

Capsules, tinctures, and teas of raspberry are not as effective.

Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica)

Some persons dislike nettle because of it is strong sting, but it is an herb with myriad gains for the expectant mother. A strong infusion (prepared by brewing one ounce of dried nettle leaves in a quart of boiling water for at least four hours) helps prevent varicose veins and hemorrhoids, eases leg cramps and backache, reduces the incidence of hemorrhage after birth, and increments the richness of breast milk.

Every cup of nettle infusion furnishes awful amounts of energy as well as big amounts of calcium, magnesium and vitamins A, D, C, B, and K. It prevents folic acid anemia and iron deficiency anemia, and is likewise a digestive aid, a strengthener to the lungs, an ally of the kidneys, and a revitalizing to the hair and skin.

Capsules, tinctures, and teas of nettle are not as effective.

Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)

As a keeper of dairy animals, I was introduced to this herb as an ally to keep my goats’ fertility high and their milk production generous. It took only a little imagination for me to start out to use it for women, too. Red clover blossoms are best taken as a strong infusion (one ounce of dried blossoms brewed for the length of one night in a quart of boiling water). The tincture is a sedative; pills and capsules have very little effect.

To date, I know of dozens of women who, unable to conceive, have found success after drinking up to a quart of red clover infusion each day for at least six weeks. The generous amounts of minerals, proteins, antioxidants, and phytoestrogens in red clover restore health to the entire generative system. It’s outstanding for men, too. Most noteworthy are the amounts of vitamin E and the presence of selenium and zinc. Red clover has ten times more plant hormones than soy.

Don’t stop drinking red clover infusion once you get pregnant though. The infusion prevents and eases the constipation so mutual for the duration of pregnancy. It likewise strengthens the liver and improves appetite, in particular when morning disease is a problem. And it relieves anxiety.

And keep on drinking red clover once your child is born. There is no more priceless herb to keep breast milk rich and the breasts healthful then red clover. In fact, it is the world’s most valued anti-cancer herb, acting not only to eliminate cancer but to stop it is occurrence as well.

Seaweeds (including kelp, nori, dulse, kombu, and wakame)

One of the best green allies for women in their fertile years is seaweed, both for it is solid homogeneous inorgani substance richness, and for the special substances it holds which directly counter birth defects. Algin or alginic acid, found in a heap of seaweeds, absorbs radioactive neucleotides and heavy metals. When eaten by the potential mother and father, seaweed protects them from cancer and protects the fetus from faulty genes. Seaweeds likewise protect the fetus and parents from the destructive effects of chemicals and carcinogens.

Seaweed is one of the most nourishment providing plants known. Earl Mindell, in his book Vitamin Bible notes that kelp holds vitamins A, B, C, and E, as well as choline, carotenes, and 23 solid homogeneous inorgani substances including calcium, selenium, iron, magnesium, and zinc. He recommends it peculiarly for nourishing the brain, spinal cord, and nerves of the fetus. Eating seaweeds steadily improves the fertility and the health of the pregnant woman, too, strengthening her digestive system, increasing her overall energy, and helping to prevent constipation, muscle cramps, backaches, anemias, hemorrhoids, and depression. For healthful skin, hair, and bones, there is no better feed or herb than seaweed.

Capsules, tablets, and powdered seaweeds are not as effective as eating seaweed as a vegetable assorted times a week. In addition to buying seaweed at your health feed store, you may harvest it yourself. There are no toxicant seaweeds. For more info on harvesting and using seaweeds, consult the Lewallens’ Sea Vegetable Gourmet Cookbook.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis)

This mutual weed of suburban lawns is one of the best liver tonics known. All parts of the dandelion are medicinal: the roots, leaves, and flowers are brewed into tinctures, medicinal vinegars, cordials, wines, and bitter infusions.

If you dig your own, use them to make a mineral-rich vinegar: Fill a jar with cut dandelion, then fill the jar to the top with pasteurized apple cider vinegar. Cover with a piece of plastic wrap kept on with a rubber band. Label, with the date; it’s ready to use in six weeks. Try it as a salad dressing, or a condiment for beans. Some women like to drink it introductory thing in the morning: 1-2 tablespoonsful in a glass of water.

Nourishing the liver is critical for the duration of pregnancy. Lack of strong liver functioning is implicated in morning sickness, hemorrhoids, constipation, heartburn, indigestion, lack of energy, headaches, and mood swings. If using the tincture, undertake a dose of 10-20 drops in a little glass of water just before meals.

Fennel Seed (Foeniculum vulgare)

Anise Seed (Pimpinella anisum)

Dill Seed (Anethum graveolens)

Caraway Seed (Carum carvi)

Coriander Seed (Coriandrum sativum)

The aromatic seeds are members of the “carrot family” of plants and are applied around the world to ease indigestion, freshen breath, and increase milk supply. As the medicinal value is found in a volatile oil, the seeds are quickly and without apparent effort brewed: add a heaping tablespoonful to a mug and fill it with water just off the boil, letting it steep for 2-5 minutes. A spoonful of honey is a delightful addition.

For a somewhat more perplexed brew, midwife Elizabeth Davis (in her book Heart and Hands) relates this old wives’ remedy to increase milk supply: Boil 1/2 cup pearled barley in three cups water for 25 minutes. Strain and refrigerate. Heat (but do not boil) one cup of barley water and pour it over one teaspoon fennel seeds. Steep no longer than thirty minutes.

And how delightful that the ease imparted by the brew influences the infant through the breastmilk, relieving colic, turning fretfulness into slumber, and countering teething pain. For best results drink your brew, hot or cold, while nursing your baby. Herbalist Juliette de Bairacli Levy advises mothers of infants and young children to always carry some aromatic seeds in their pocket for the children to chew will have to they be car-sick or become argumentative.

Ginger (Zingiber officinalis)

When it comes to quelling nausea or morning sickness (motion sickness, too) there is no better herb than ginger root. Whether you use it fresh or dried, a little ginger goes a long way toward warming the belly and relieving queasy feelings. Some books mistakenly list ginger as an herb that may cause a miscarriage. This misinformation no doubt got started by a hopeful woman who had noticed that drinking ginger tea made her menses flow more easily. But midwives agree that ginger is safe, even in early pregnancy.

In addition to quelling morning sickness, ginger helps prevent constipation of pregnancy, keeps the pelvic muscles warmed and toned, relieves intestinal cramping and gas (in infants, too), increments digestive strength by advancing the secretion of digestive enzymes, lowers blood pressure, and restores vitality.

Calcium

Of course calcium is a mineral, not an herb, but it is so essential for the duration of pregnancy that it deserves our attention. Lack of adequate calcium for the duration of pregnancy may cause muscle cramps, backache, high blood pressure, intense labor pains, severe afterbirth pains, loss of teeth, and pre-eclampsia. Lack of calcium likewise contributes to feeble fetal heart action, a difficult birth, and “cranky” babies with effortlessly irritated nervous and digestive systems. For optimal health of mother and child, eat a great deal of foods rich in calcium and other minerals.

The calcium found in foods and herbs is metabolized by the body far more efficaciously than the calcium in pills. Calcium in plants is found in the form of solid homogeneous inorgani substances salts, which are naturally chelated. In addition, the varied forms of these salts aids in assimilation. And, of course, no plant holds only one mineral. The multitude of solid homogeneous inorgani substance salts found in herbs and foods act synergistically with the calcium salts, bettering utilization by all the body’s tissues.

In general, to improve calcium assimilation, women are advised to consume it with acidic foods (antacids interfere with calcium absorption), a great deal of vitamin D (which may be invented by sitting in the sun for 15-20 minutes), magnesium, and each day exercise. Stress, use of antacids, consumption of coffee, use of steroids, drinking fluoridated water, and too much phosphorous in the diet likewise interfere with calcium assimilation.

Getting 1500 to 2000 milligrams of nourishing calcium salts each day is not hard with the support of Wise Woman ways.

Many wild greens are exceptionally rich in calcium and other solid homogeneous inorgani substance salts. The leaves of lamb’s quarters, mallow, galinsoga, shepherd’s purse, knotweed, bidens, amaranth, or dandelion, when cooked until tender, supply more calcium per half-cup serving than a half-cup of milk.

Herbal teas and tinctures comprise little or no calcium salts. For solid homogeneous inorgani substance richness, make herbal infusions by steeping one ounce of dried herb (such as raspberry, nettle, or red clover) for the length of one night in a quart of boiling water. Or make mineral-rich vinegars by steeping fresh herbs in apple cider vinegar for six weeks. The long steeping of the water infusion releases minerals, the acid of the vinegar does it too. A cup of herbal infusion may have 150-300 milligrams of calcium salts. A tablespoon of medicinal herbal vinegar may comprise 75-150 milligrams of calcium salts.

Cultivated greens are good origins of calcium, better if they are cooked thoroughly, and best if they are organic. Kale, collards, mustard greens, oriental greens, broccoli de rape, turnip greens, even cabbage supply 100-250 milligrams of calcium salts per half-cup serving.

Fresh dairy productions are the best place to get solid homogeneous inorgani substance salts, exceptionally calcium, but there is controversy in regards to the assimilability of calcium from pasteurized milk. Fortunately, raw milk cheeses are now without apparent effort available; look for them as a authenti source of nutrients.

When milk is made into yogurt, it becomes superbly digestible and the calcium content increments by fifty percent (up to 450 milligrams of calcium in just one cup). A daily cup of plain yogurt not only prevents pregnancy problems, it also counteracts vaginal and bladder infections. Women who eat yogurt regularly are far less likely to be diagnosed with cancer as well. When buying yogurt, I look for plain yogurt that holds only milk and culture. I perfectly stay clear from dried milk powder, skim milk powder, pectin, and other thickeners.

Other great-tasting origins of calcium include goat milk and goat cheese, canned fish eaten with the bones such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel, and tahini (ground sesame seeds).

There are roughly 200 milligrams of calcium in two ounces of nuts (excluding peanuts), one ounce of dried seaweed, two ounces of carob powder, one ounce of cheese, half a cup of cooked greens, half a cup of milk, three eggs, four ounces of fish, or one tablespoon of molasses.

Many fruits are rich in calcium (though not as rich as the above foods). Dried dates, figs raisins, prunes, papaya and elderberries are the best.

Avoid foods high in oxalic acid such as spinach, swiss chard, beet greens, rhubarb, and brewer’s yeast. They interfere with your capacity to absorb calcium.

Do not use bone meal or oyster shell tablets as origins of supplemental calcium. They have been found to be high in lead, mercury, cadmium and other toxic metals, which may cause birth defects in your child.
